Winter Safety Tips

Winter has arrived!  Here are some tips to stay warm and toasty this season.

Watch Your Step:

  • Take small steps and move slowly in snow and ice conditions
  • Be sure to wear proper footwear

Dress for the Weather:

  • Wear a hat and layered clothing with a wind resistant outer layer
  • Cover as much exposed skin as possible. Watch for signs of frostbite and hypothermia: loss of feeling and white or pale extremities, excessive shivering
  • Stay dry, wet clothing can lower body temperature

Drive Safely:

  • Check the weather and road conditions often
  • Keep a safe distance behind plows
  • Get winter tires
  • Slow down and give yourself lots of extra travel time
  •  Make sure to remove ice and snow from all windows, mirrors, lights and roof of the vehicle
  • Wait for foggy windows to clear up to ensure good visibility
  • Keep a full tank of gas and a winter survival kit in the vehicle (include flashlight, duct tape, flares, warm blankets, water, salt, shovel, booster cables and first aid supplies)

Space Heaters:

  • Read the manufacturer's instructions and warning labels carefully
  • Keep at least 3 feet away from other objects, including papers, clothing, rugs, curtains
  • Place on a level, flat surface
  • Never place on cabinets, tables, furniture or carpet
  • Never leave unattended
  • Plug directly into wall outlet, do not use an extension cord or power strip which could overheat.  Do not plug any other electrical devices into the same outlet.
